Space Counting is a game wherein pairs of people attempt to first work against each other and then work together. In the first round, it’s a race on who can write the numbers one through ten in the air the fastest. In the second round, it’s a collaborative attempt to write the numbers one through ten together at the same time. For one Friday Culture Talk, we tried playing this game.
Space Counting is a great game to play, especially among members of a team, because it helps promote the idea that collaboration among team members is better than competition, it emphasizes that the way towards excelling is through working together, and that we could all learn something along the way. Plus, it’s just really fun to play and you don’t even need any props to do it!
It wasn’t all fun and games, of course, as we all had problems while playing. Some of us were counting too slow, some of us count too fast, and some of us even write down our numbers differently from other people.
The goal was to get the whole team to understand the differences between competing against each other and working together. Not only that, but we also had to learn that we were all able to achieve our objectives quicker and with a better understanding of the task if we all just stopped competing against one another and started working together.
Watch the video, and find out just how well - or how poorly - we all did when it came to both competing and working together!
